Saving Mangar Forest Task yet to be achieved

A 500-hectare forest in the Aravallis, revered by the villagers of Mangar in Faridabad (near Delhi), faces destruction as the Haryana gov-ernment has decided to permit development in this area. Although the villagers have risen up in arms against this de-cision, there are fears that they would succumb to the greed of real estate developers and government officials. Mangar resident activist and Vision of India volunteer Sunil Harsana is spearheading a cam-paign to send a petition to Union Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan urging that Haryana should cancel all construction plans in the Aravalli forests and the Haryana government should "observe the law laid down by the Supreme Court on preservation of Aravallis” eco-structure and not sanction development in hilly forests.
